Chapter Twelve

“Do you think that worked?” I murmur, kicking away dead ivy from my boot. It covers the ground in patches not covered by snow.

Marlena doesn’t get a chance to answer. Cyn and Torren appear in front of us, blocking our way and nearly scaring the frosting right out of me.

“We’re accompanying you regardless of our inferiority,” Torren says. “We are not without skills.”

“Dude, I never said I was inferior,” Cyn mumbles.

“Well, you are, dog breath,” Gunther tells him.

Cyn looks unnerved. “Look, …er, sword… I don’t know what your problem is, but—”

The apple piece in my belly burns. “Please! If I tell you a story, will you let us pass?”

Marlena shoots me a quelling glance. “You can’t.”

“It’s just a story,” I assure her with a wink. “A faerytale.”

Torren moves aside. “I wish to hear it.” He motions for me to lead the way.

I keep my feet planted. “No interruptions, no questions.”

“Agreed.”

Cyn nods.

I motion at Marlena, and we resume walking. “When we get to the portal, the two of you must promise to leave and return to your homes.”

Snow crunches underfoot, neither of them agreeing this time.

“Explain the term ‘barren,’” Cyn says, his wolfish eyes glinting in a patch of light cutting through the canopy. “Why is our world labeled that way?”

“Because humans are barren of magic.” I say. “Yes, you have vampyres, shifters, witches, and other assorted beings, but the magic where we come from is…different.”

“You’re pushing it,” Marlena growls under her breath.

A voice comes out of nowhere. “What you all are doing out here?”

My head snaps up. Mayor Jo sits on a branch high up in an old oak tree. “Mayor?”

He leaps, landing gracefully on his feet and causing a plume of snow to go airborne. “This is a surprise.”

Marlena stands straighter. “We were out for a night stroll. What were you doing in that tree?”

“Beautiful night.” He takes her hand and bows over it, giving her a subtle kiss. “Isn’t it?”

She giggles. Giggles! He didn’t even answer her question.

“It’s cold, if you ask me,” I say.

“What update do you have for me?”

I gulp. “I’m working on it right now.”

“Hmm.” He regards me and the group. “Chief Barnhill isn’t having any luck with his investigation. I was hoping you were.”

“I am.” Sort of.

Torren sidles up to me. “We are. I’m sure after tonight, we’ll have key information for you and the chief.”

Jo nods and puts an arm around my shoulders, guiding me forward again. “Assorted beings. That’s what you said, right? Like me, you mean?”

The chill in my bones dissipates with his touch. “You’re also unique, but not like us. Magic in this realm comes from a source outside of each of you. Spells, the elements, that sort of thing. It also requires certain resources to keep you… powered up.”

Torren is unhappy about Jo's arm around my shoulder. Quick as lightning, he knocks it away. “Explain.”

Jo glares at him. The vampyre ignores it.

Oh, good grief. “You’re a vampyre,” I say to Torren, “created by another vampyre. That creation occurred because of an exchange of blood.
